Overview

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a very strong dog that is exceptionally loyal to its family. They are known for the wrinkles that adorn most of their body and can be very intimidating towards strangers, which make them a great watchdog.

Activity

Chinese Shar-Peis don’t require a large amount of exercise and can do OK without a yard however an average sized yard is preferred. They love to take walks but because of the way their folds are arranged, they tend to get overheated fairly easily and fresh water should be available when needed.

Care

Most of the care given to a Chinese Shar-Pei is in the cleaning of their ears and under the folds of their wrinkles. Their coat doesn’t require much more than the occasional brushing with a rubber brush to remove the dead hair.

Character

Chinese Shar-Peis will need to be socialized at a young age to keep them from becoming overly shy or overprotective. They are dignified and intelligent with an alertness that makes them a perfect candidate for any kind of guard dog position.

Coat

Chinese Shar-Pei dogs have an extremely short coat that can sometimes be no longer than about an inch long at the withers. The hair is short and coarse to the touch and should only be bathed when necessary.

Temperament

The Chinese Shar-Pei will do well with children but should be monitored around infants. They make great companions for experienced dog owners but are not a breed for just anyone. This powerful and intelligent breed can be aggressive towards other animals unless socialized at a young age.

Training

You will need to have firm handling when training Chinese Shar-Peis as they can be quite stubborn at times. They are very eager to please and their intelligence makes them very good for a variety of tasks.
