Overview
The Chow Chow is an ancient Chinese breed that was used as an all-purpose dog that excelled at hunting, protection, pulling, and herding. These days they are more used as a companion dog rather than a work dog.
Activity
The Chow Chow has a tendency to be a very lazy dog. They would much rather remain inside instead of going outside for extended periods of time, especially when it’s hot. They can do well in an apartment as long as you can take short walks a couple times a day to ensure its exercise.
Care
The Chow Chow requires almost daily grooming and brushing in order to keep their coat healthy. They should only be bathed when necessary to keep their natural oils. They do well in cooler climates and tend to have problems in warmer climates. They also have a very low tolerance for any anesthesia.
Character
This breed is one of spirit and beauty. They are extremely intelligent dogs that are self-reliant and proud. They have the distinct blue black tongue that makes this breed recognizable to just about anyone that sees it. They are dignified and have independent spirits that make them seem discerning and highly aloof.
Coat
This breed has an extreme double coat that tends to shed quite a bit throughout the season. The upper coat is very coarse and becomes longer around the neck to give the impression of a lion’s mane. The under coat is very thick and dense and supports the upper coat.
Temperament
This breed is one of the dominant breeds that you cannot back down from on training. They need to be socialized and firmly trained when young to keep them from becoming over dominant in the house. With the family, they are gentle and patient but very reserved with any strangers. They are not good with small children unless they are extremely well behaved and give it respect.
Training
This breed will need to have ongoing training in obedience and socialization due to the fact that they will tend to take control of the house hold. They are fairly easy to housebreak but only if you can train them in a way that makes sense to them. They are a very proud breed that is highly intelligent and works well as a guard dog.
