Overview

German Shorthaired Pointers are all purpose gun dogs that carry excellent abilities in water and field. They're well balanced dogs with a lean body and an elegant head. Hunters originally bred these dogs during the 19th century in Germany. They needed a dog that could help those hunting on foot.

Activity

German Shorthaired Pointers are very energetic and tireless. They MUST have vigorous exercise daily. If they don't get enough exercise and stimulation, they get restless and start destroying things. These dogs are great family pets of active families. They need lots of space to run so they'll need a fenced in yard.

Care

It's quite easy to groom German Shorthaired Pointers. Use a stiff bristle brush to brush them regularly and check their feet after exercising or working. It's important to thoroughly dry them after strenuous exercise so they don't get chilled. These dogs are average shedders. Generally healthy, they can develop things like hip dysplasia, ear infections and skin cancer.

Character

German Shorthaired Pointers are active, affectionate, responsive and gentle. They're friendly and eager to please. These dogs aren't nervous or flighty but they can become distracted easily.

Coat

German Shorthaired Pointers have a coat with a harsh texture. It's flat, short, thick and dense as well as water resistant. The color can be solid liver, liver roan and liver and white spotted.

Temperament

German Shorthaired Pointer dogs are highly energetic, quite smart, and love pleasing their master. They're friendly and happy and get on great with children. They also get on well with other dogs as well as cats as long as they're introduced and raised with them from puppies. These dogs do love to bark so keep that in mind if you live in apartments. They're also protective and loyal and love being inside with their family.

Training

It's easy to train German Shorthaired Pointers although they can be stubborn. Training must be conducted with firmness, patience, and consistency. They're excellent in tracking, agility, Flyball, hunting and obedience. They have a natural guarding instinct and must be trained in obedience.
